About Tay Point Farms

Tay Point Farms is a family-owned-and-operated business located in the Midland/Penetanguishene area, headed by me, Loran Puddicombe, son of Dave and Kathryn Puddicombe.

As with many of the other projects started on the Puddicombe's farm, our meat chickens were originally for our family. However, with growing interest from our friends, neighbours and customers of the other family business - Puddicombe Welding - we decided to expand our free-range operation to meet the growing demand for our chickens, eggs, turkeys and fresh vegetables.

Tay Point Farms farmhouse and barn were first established in 1870, by the Williams family and, over the years, the Williams family (Kathryn's side) has remained on the property and has seen it develop from a timber mill to a working farm raising livestock and actively cropping various grain varieties.

Free-Range Meat Chickens

Our meat chickens are grown beginning in mid-June and are shipped out late September to a government-licensed abattoir for cleaning and packaging and are sold half-frozen right away, or frozen year-round.

The breed of chicken used is actually very common; the White Rock Cornish X. It is developed specifically as a meat bird, many Ontario growers - both big and small - raise this breed for its ability to grow fast. However, instead of using large-scale feeding methods, we use more traditional techniques to grow our chickens. They are fed a wide range of grains, such as oats, corn and peas. As soon as the chickens are old enough we allow them to range outside on the grass. Though it requires more effort in the day-to-day operations, allowing them to range improves the health of the chickens and produces meat of a much higher quality than you can buy in the supermarkets.

Farm-Fresh Eggs

We have recently expanded our group of laying hens to meet the growing demand for our farm-fresh eggs.

The freshness and quality of the eggs come from the hens' quality of feed and lifestyle. With only the highest quality (and locally sourced) feed used, along with a 100% free-range environment for the chickens to roam and graze, our eggs have thicker, healthier shells than typical, store-bought eggs, and much richer and creamier yolks.

Stop in today to pick up some of the best eggs you've ever had!

Home–Grown Produce

Traditional growing methods are the standard used in our vegetable garden, such as natural fertilizers and no pesticide use. All plants and seeds are put in late May, and care and and maintained until ready according to the harvesting time of the particular plant.

They are picked and then cleaned and prepared for our vegetable stand by the side of the road.

As with many things in farming, the quantity and quality can vary on the weather, meaning more or less of one type of vegetable are sold as long as they are available.
